I only got to see Burton act in person once, during the "Camelot" tour you
mention here, probably. A Christmas gift was to see him in San Francisco in
December 1980. The gifter of the tickets was a poor student, as was I, so the
tickets were in the next to last row of the balcony. Truly nosebleed seats.
For the weeks between knowing I would be going and the actual play, I told
everyone who would listen "I’m going to see Richard Burton! I’m going to see
Richard Burton!" As we made our way to our seats and waited for the
performance to start, I squeezed my friend’s hand, whispering "I’m going to
see Richard Burton!" Then the overture started and the chorus sang and
suddenly the flap on the tent in the center of the stage flew open and out
stepped — Arthur. It was not until the intermission that I even remembered
that it was Richard Burton that I had come to see, so engrossed was I in the
play. I have yet to be equally transported by another actor.
